Presencia is so named because of its double-meaning: it hints at the presences - ghostly, personal, archival, ancestral, historical - that are around us and form who we are. It is also about being present in the moment: for the musicians on this recording, that means presence in the music and full uncompromising commitment to its interpretation and realisation.

 

The trio was founded collectively with a desire to get back to their roots of bands formed in the teenage years. Experiences of writing music together, or each bringing ideas, from very open to very detailed, but retaining an openness to the input of the other people. There is no band leader, and the process is democratic. At the same time, all 3 members have a predisposition for developing ideas in the long-form; compositionally and improvisationally this is where Presencia is rooted. This is true for all of the pieces on this album, whether short and cell-based, long and through-composed, or fully improvised.
